Frequently Asked Questions

What is MAVIS?

MAVIS is Speaker Verification / Identification biometric system which means it has the ability to verify you from the sound of your voice and also pick out your voice from other peoples voices.

How does MAVIS work?

Please look at the Theory behind MAVIS.

Who can use MAVIS?

Anyone! It doesn’t matter how old you are, what nationality, or language you speak.

What happens if I have a cough or cold?

If you have a normal cough and cold the system will still be able to verify you. If you have a prolonged and extreme cold or cough then we recommend that for the duration that you have it you re register your password. When you get better re register again (which doesn’t take very long) with your normal voice. In fact MAVIS can cope with people who have speech disabilities.

What happens if a caller speaks with variable speed?

MAVIS’s internal processing will tell you whether you are speaking too fast, slow, loud or soft if you simply follow the instructions on the screen.

What happens if a caller’s voice changes with age?

Each time you use MAVIS the system is looking for changes and if it finds something it will automatically update your identifier so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

What happens if a caller is stressed or drunk?

If you are really stressed out or drunk then the system will not authorise you and tell you to contact someone.

What happens if there is a noisy background?

MAVIS has been designed to process with fairly normal noisy backgrounds, like in your car, shopping mall, office etc and with other people talking in the background. But like most things it has a limit and if you try and use it in very noisy conditions then the noise will naturally drown out your speech and it would have difficulty recognising you. Just like we humans would do in the same conditions.

What happens if there is a tape recording?

One of the very unique features about MAVIS is that it can detect recordings. If it determines that it is a recording it will simply not accept you.
